Beverly Ruth Handkins, 90, from Houston, TX, went to be with her Lord on Monday, May 8, 2017. She was born September 6, 1926 in Lafayette, Indiana, the daughter of Ruby and Kenneth Edwards.
Beverly grew up in Valparaiso and had completed her first two years at Perdue University pursuing a career in the sciences, when life took a turn and she met her husband of over 65 year, Harold Handkins. They were married December 30, 1946 and started their family of three children in Michigan, eventually moving to Houston, TX. Beverly loved music and played both the piano and organ as well as hand bells. Her strong secretarial and organization skills evolved into a busy career as an office manager for a small geophysical company in Houston, TX. She was an avid bridge player and golfer. Her creative talents kept her continuously engaged in new projects – from sewing to painting to refinishing furniture. She loved to travel, at one time learning both French and German for upcoming trips. But true heart and soul of her life was always the love of her family.
She is survived by her sister Rosalie Roth; a daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Eddie Kent; a son, Scott Handkins; grandchildren, Kelly Richie, Traci Burchfield, Sara, Marie and Michael Handkins; and two great-daughters, Reese Richie and Paxton Burchfield.
