Obituary
David Jean (Dean) Mantooth, of Hutchinson, passed away Thursday, July 26, 2012, at Wesley Hospital in Wichita at the age of 81. He was born April 13, 1931, in Anthony, Kan. He was the youngest of 10 children of Franklin and Sylvia (Straight) Mantooth. He attended grade school in Leon, Kan., and graduated from Zenda High School in 1948.
On June 5, 1950, he married Marie Ann Nichols at the St. John Catholic Church in Zenda. They moved to Cunningham where Dean began working for Skelly Oil Co. He was a KSHSAA basketball and football official for many years, often working games with Don Schnittker and Jack Meyers. In 1977, he and Marie Ann moved to Sylvia, Kan. He retired from the oil company after 40 years of service, and in 2005 he and Marie Ann moved to Hutchinson. One of their favorite activities was to swing dance at Big Band Concerts. He will always be remembered as "the man with the camera," as he enjoyed filming every athletic game, concert and other events in the lives of his children and grandchildren.
Survivors include: his wife of 62 years, Marie Ann Mantooth; sons, Brad Mantooth and Brooks Mantooth, both of Hutchinson; daughters, Cindy Anthony (Kent) of Sterling and Cheri Dohrmann (Lowell) of Medicine Lodge; grandchildren, Kristen Howie (Adrian) of Maize, Janie Brokenicky (Cole) of Hillsboro, Holly Baalman (Chad) of Valley Center, Jay Dohrmann, Judd Dohrmann, and Joe Dohrmann, of Medicine Lodge, and Julie Dohrmann (fianc'e Brandon Warner) of Broken Arrow, Okla. There is one great-granddaughter, Kinley Howie. He is also survived by a brother, Charley Mantooth (Ruthie) of Woodland Hills, Calif.; two sisters, Ruth Reed of Fort Collins, Colo. and Maxine Mitchell of Drury, Kan. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Ivan, Kenneth, Erwin and Donald; and sisters, Lela Huddleston and Teena Brown.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, July 30, 2012, at the United Methodist Church, Cunningham. Visitation from 1 to 8 p.m. with family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Livingston Funeral Home, Kingman. Burial will be in the Maud Cemetery, Cunningham.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Cunningham Community Center.
